James Gowen, CFA
Chief Investment Officer - Small Cap Equities
Prior to joining Spouting Rock Asset Management ("SRAM"), James was with Kalmar Investments, a $6 billion at peak equity manager, as a Portfolio Manager and Analyst and rose to become Co-leader of the investment team. At Kalmar, the team managed the Kalmar Growth Value Mutual Fund and were sub-advisors with Vanguard on two of their mutual funds. James began his investment career at Inverness Counsel, Inc. in New York, ultimately rising to Vice President. Following Research and Portfolio Management roles at Gardner Lewis Asset Management and E.R. Taylor Investments he joined Friess Associates in 2001. During the 12 years he was there he rose to become a Team Leader and Principal at Friess Associates a manager of Small Cap, Mid-Cap and All-Cap strategies through the Brandywine family of mutual funds.
Ken began consulting with Spouting Rock Asset Management in 2017 as an advisor to the Small Cap Equities strategy.
With SRAM, he capitalizes on 26 years in the institutional investment healthcare sector. His previous experience includes overseeing Humana’s corporate venture capital effort, eleven years as an award-winning sell-side analyst and the last 13 years on the buyside as a sub-advisor at Friess Associates (long only) and Blackthorn Investment Group (market neutral).
At Blackthorn, he was part of four-person portfolio team that won back to back “Top Lipper Award for Market Neutral Hedge Fund in North America”. Ken also currently manages his own long oriented healthcare fund, TallGrass Health Sciences Fund.
Ken graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in finance and minor in accounting. Ken has served on the Dean of Student’s Advisory Board and the Finance Advisory Board of the Business School at K-State.

John began working with SRAM in 2017 as a research analyst the Small Cap Equities strategy.
He has a multi-faceted US equities background, having experience investing in venture capital, private equity and public portfolio management ranging from small cap to large cap companies. Organizations for which John has invested during his 40-year career include General Electric Pension Trust, the University of Rochester endowment, Horsley Bridge Partners and Friess Associates. During the 21 years he was at Friess he rose to become a Team Leader and Principal on a team that managed $2 Billion in AUM at its peak.
As a public portfolio manager during the most recent twenty years of his career, assets for which he was directly responsible appreciated by more than four hundred basis points per annum above the relevant benchmark, the Russell 3000 Growth Index.
He graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School with a B.S. in Economics in 1976 and became a Chartered Financial Analyst in 1981.
